Plants unit

When do you usually begin a unit on Plants?  Nearer to Mother's Day?  Now, so that you can plant a seed and it will be a nice flower by Mother's Day?  How early do you start your unit?

  1. I start my plant unit just after spring break. This is the first year I have not had the kids plant seeds in dirt. We used lima beans in Zip-loc baggies and did all types of experiments with them---variable conditions. (I teach second graders) Since we have no materials or resources, I grabbed all I could from TpT and Scholastic Books $1.00 downloads and came up with a plan. This past week we took my unit test and the majority of the students passed! Our downfall was the carrying on of traits from parent plant to baby plant. Live and learn, I know what to fix next year!
